The deadline to file for a payout of up to $400 as part of an Apple Inc. class-action settlement is quickly approaching. This lawsuit alleges that MacBook laptops sold between 2015 and 2019 had a design flaw that caused a litany of problems. Those who wish to make a claim must do so by 11:59 p.m. PT on March 6. Those who want to object to the settlement had to do so by Feb. 10.
To submit a claim, one can go to the settlement website and fill out an online form. Alternatively, they can mail a completed form to MacBook Keyboard Litigation Settlement c/o JND Legal Administration PO Box 91341 Seattle, WA 98111. Proof of purchase and the laptop’s serial number will be required for claim approval. Those who had to replace their keyboard multiple times within four years can receive a payment between $300 and $395. Those who only had to replace their keyboard once are eligible for up to $125, while those who replaced keycaps can receive up to $50.
If the settlement is approved, payments will likely be sent out after the Final Approval Hearing on March 16. Those who appear in Apple’s records as having received multiple Topcase Replacements will receive a summary notice. Those who appear as having received a single Topcase Replacement or Keycap Replacement will receive an email or postcard with a Unique ID that can be used to complete and submit an Online Claim Form.
Apple agreed to pay $50 million to settle the lawsuit last year, which claimed that the company knew of a defect in its butterfly keyboards and fraudulently concealed it from customers. In November 2022, a court decision meant that the settlement applies to MacBook owners nationwide.
