Koray Alpergin was a Turkish DJ and radio station owner who was abducted and killed in a disused restaurant in London. He was horrifically tortured to death, suffering a total of 94 injuries. The perpetrators of this crime, acting on behalf of the notorious gang the Tottenham Turks, kidnapped Alpergin after placing a tracker on his car and then ambushing him. During the trial, only two men were found guilty of manslaughter, and the other three suspects were given various sentences for their involvement in the crime.
In her sentencing, Judge Sarah Whitehouse, KC, acknowledged the extreme violence that was inflicted upon Alpergin. Due to legal limitations, she could not sentence the men as harshly as she would have liked. Alpergin’s cousin Meliz Halil described the barbaric torture and the impact it had on the family. She expressed their fear that Alpergin’s killers would commit similar crimes in the future, leaving others to suffer a fate as horrid as his own. The lack of Turkish and Kurdish officers in the Metropolitan Police was noted as a potential barrier to curbing this type of criminal activity.
