The rescue operation at a coal mine in central Colombia that collapsed earlier this week came to an end on Thursday. Officials confirmed that the accident caused the death of 21 workers after the mine near the town of Sutatausa caved in following an explosion that blocked several of its entrances. Rescue teams worked tirelessly for over 30 hours to find survivors and recover the bodies. The governor of Cundinamarca Province, Nicolás García, revealed that nine workers survived and were released from hospital, while the families of those who lost their lives were receiving psychological support. All workers present at the mine during the accident have been accounted for. Mining accidents are a common occurrence in Colombia, mainly in coal and gold mining. In the past year, 117 accidents have been recorded by the National Mining Agency, resulting in the fatality of 146 workers.
