A small aircraft crashed on Dec. 27, leaving 10 people injured near a diamond mine about 300 km northeast of Yellowknife. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton launched a search-and-rescue operation after the Air Tindi Twin Otter aircraft went down about 16 km southeast of Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories. A Royal Canadian Air Force Hercules aircraft was dispatched to the accident area on Dec. 27 evening, with three search-and-rescue technicians parachuting to the crash site with supplies and equipment. The aircraft had two crew members and eight passengers on board, six of whom had minor injuries and two with moderate to serious injuries.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton is working with Air Tindi on an extraction plan to transport the group to Yellowknife on the morning of Dec. 28. This plan includes preparing helicopters with medical teams to travel to the accident location.
